Why does dried Irish moss have salt on it?

Because sea moss grows in the ocean, dried Irish moss may naturally contain salt and other small traces of its marine environment. The salt you see on the product is normal. Irish moss should therefore be thoroughly cleaned and soaked before use.

How to Clean & Prepare Your Irish Moss

Inspect the moss. Remove any visible debris or unwanted particles.

Rinse thoroughly. Place the dried Irish moss in a large bowl and rinse several times under cool, clean running water. Gently massage and separate the moss with your hands to help remove excess salt.
Repeat the rinse. Drain the water and rinse again until most of the visible salt and residue have been removed.
Soak in fresh water. Completely cover the cleaned Irish moss with plenty of fresh, cool water. Allow it to soak for approximately 12–24 hours. It will expand considerably and become softer.
Change the water if necessary. If the moss is especially salty, discard the soaking water, rinse again, and add fresh water.
Drain before using. Once fully hydrated, drain and give it a final rinse. Do not use the salty rinse water.

Making Sea Moss Gel

After soaking and cleaning, place the softened Irish moss in a blender. Add fresh water gradually and blend until smooth and creamy. Use less water for a thicker gel and more for a thinner consistency.

Transfer the finished gel to a clean, covered container and refrigerate promptly. Because homemade sea moss gel is a fresh food without preservatives, make only what you expect to use reasonably soon and discard it if you notice an unusual odor, appearance, or signs of spoilage.
